In this 2 hour workshop participants will be introduced to the concept of stepped care in mental health, specifically in the context of the way mental health problems present and are managed in primary care. The history and thinking behind the development of the stepped care model will be discussed, as well as its advantages of the approach for the patient and the mental health system generally.

Facilitator: Genevieve Yates

Dr Genevieve Yates, MBBS (Hons) FRACGP, is a medical educator and GP currently based in Ballarat. Previous roles include RACGP’s General Manager of Education, RACGP’s national Principal Medical Education Advisor, the RACGP Queensland Censor, Chair of the RACGP Expert Committee Pre-Fellowship Education, and a medical educator for MDA National. In 2014 she was awarded GPET’s Medical Educator of the Year.

Genevieve has worked in GP training since 2005, and has taught a wide range of health professionals (allied health, GPs, students and medical specialists) around Australia and internationally.

When not healing the sick or teaching the healers, Genevieve likes to indulge in a range of creative pursuits including music, theatre and creative writing. Genevieve injects her creativity into medicine and medicine into creativity.

She has a keen interest in upskilling health professionals on mental health topics and has worked as a GP facilitator for the Black Dog Institute since 2014.
