National Psychosocial Support (NPS)

What is NPS?

The National Psychosocial Support measure is a mental health program that provides a range of non-clinical, community-based supports. These supports might be delivered individually or in a group setting, and aim to support people to achieve their recovery goals.

Who is NPS for?

The program is designed for people who are just below those who qualify for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This group of people may not be eligible for the NDIS because of the episodic nature of their mental illness, or because their illness, whilst severe, is not associated with a significant psychosocial disability at a level that would qualify for NDIS entry.

NPS is for people:

  • with a moderate-severe mental health condition;
  • who have an associated level of reduced psychosocial functional capacity;
  • are not assisted by the NDIS, and;
  • for whom clinical care (e.g. seeing a psychologist) does not provide enough support to help them build capacity for daily living
